KANSAS CITY, Mo., Sept. 5 (UPI) -- Alex Gordon's go-ahead homer leading off the sixth inning Sunday lifted the Kansas City Royals to a 2-1 decision over Detroit.

Gordon connected on a blast to right on the first pitch from Tigers reliever Brad Thomas (5-2), giving the Royals the lead for good and allowing them to salvage one win in a three-game series with the Tigers.

Kyle Davies (7-9) was tough, allowing only three hits over six innings. His only misstep was yielding a fifth-inning home run to Casper Wells.

The Royals bullpen secured the win by holding Detroit hitless over the final three innings. Joakim Soria picked up his 37th save of the year in the ninth.
