MLB: Seattle 1, Cleveland 0

SEATTLE, Sept. 4 (UPI) -- Luke French took a no-hitter into the seventh inning Friday and the Seattle Mariners survived a shaky ninth inning for a 1-0 victory over Cleveland.

French did not give up a hit until Shelley Duncan had a one-out single in the seventh after Shin-Soo Choo had drawn a walk. French (4-4) escaped the inning when Jayson Nix lined out to left and Choo was thrown out trying to get back to second base to complete a double play.

That was the only hit French allowed, although he walked three.

David Aardsma was called on in the ninth and walked Trevor Crowe to open the inning. Crowe was caught stealing, but Aardsma then gave up singles to Michael Brantley and Asdrubal Cabrera.

The Seattle closer then got his 27th save by retiring Choo on a fly ball to left and Shelley Duncan on a swinging third strike.

The first four Seattle batters reached base in the first inning, with Franklin Gutierrez driving home Ichiro Suzuki with a single. The Mariners had only two more hits the rest of the way.

The first-inning run came off Fausto Carmona (11-14), who went on to work eight innings.
