TEAHUPOO, French Polynesia, Sept. 4 (UPI) -- Hawaii's Andy Irons won the Billabong Pro Tahiti professional surfing tournament in Tahiti by topping American C.J. Hobgood in the final heat.
It was the 20th career victory for Irons but his first in more than three years on the Association of Surfing Professionals circuit.
Irons scored 14.67 points out of a possible 20 in Friday's finals to Hobgood's 8.33. He rallied after a spectacular wipeout on his very first wave.
"I just fell out of the sky," Irons said. "I thought my board was going to break."
Hobgood was undone by being repeatedly caught in the barrels of the 3- to 4-foot waves at Teahupoo.
Irons reached the finals by getting past current ASP champion Mick Fanning, veteran Kelly Slater and up-and-coming tour rookie Patrick Gudauskas.
