KANSAS CITY, Mo., Sept. 3 (UPI) -- Will Rhymes broke an 11th-inning tie with a two-run triple Friday and the Detroit Tigers went on to defeat Kansas City 9-5.
The Tigers overcame a four-run deficit and Kansas City eventually needed a homer by Alex Gordon in the eighth to get the game into extra innings.
Neither side could get a runner past first base in the 10th but Detroit struck for four runs in the 11th against Jesse Chavez (5-5).
Alex Avila produced a one-out single and Casper Wells reached base when third baseman Josh Fields committed a fielding error.
That brought up Rhymes, who hit a 2-1 pitch to deep center for the triple that put the Tigers in front. Johnny Damon was walked intentionally, after which Ryan Raburn's single brought home Rhymes and sent Damon to third. A squeeze bunt from Austin Jackson delivered Damon with the fourth run of the inning.
Kansas City scored four times in the second, two of the runs coming on a single by Yuniesky Betancourt. Detroit had a four-run inning as well in the seventh to tie it and Raburn put the Tigers in front in the eighth with a homer before Gordon hit his blast in the bottom of the inning.
Ryan Perry (3-5) retired all six men he faced over the 10th and 11th innings to get the win.
