PEBBLE BEACH, Calif., Sept. 3 (UPI) -- Mark Calcavecchia, seeking his first Champions Tour victory, seized a two-shot lead Friday after one round of the First Tee Open.
Calcavecchia shot an 8-under-par 64 at the Del Monte Golf Club, which along with the Pebble Beach Golf Links, is hosting this unique tournament. Each professional is teamed with a young amateur in a separate competition.
Calcavecchia, a former winner of the British Open, turned 50 June 12 and is making his seventh appearance on the Champions Tour.
Tom Pernice Jr. shot a 66 to stand alone in second. Fred Couples, second on the tour's money list behind Bernhard Langer, was tied for third at 67 with Scott Simpson, Bob Tway, Chip Beck, Tom Kite, Olin Browne and Wayne Levi. Among the top nine players, only Pernice and Beck played at Pebble Beach.
Langer, winner of both the U.S. and British Senior Opens this year, is not competing this week.
