HONOLULU, Sept. 3 (UPI) -- Matt Barkley threw five touchdown passes -- three to Ronald Johnson -- Thursday in leading the Southern Cal Trojans to a 49-36 victory over the Hawaii Warriors.
Barkley's scoring throws tied a school record as the Trojans (1-0) gave Lane Kiffin a win in his first game as Southern Cal's head coach.
Barkley, a sophomore, was 18-of-23 passing for 257 yards. Johnson caught scoring passes of 1, 13 and 3 yards and returned a punt 89 yards for a touchdown. Barkley also connected with David Ausberry and Rhett Ellison for scores and Marc Tyler, who rushed for 154 yards, scored the final Trojans touchdown on a 44-yard run.
Hawaii quarterback Bryant Moniz was 18-of-26 passing for 269 yards and a touchdown but left the game in the third quarter with an injury. Shane Austin replaced him, hitting 6-of-9 passes for 141 yards and two scores.
Hawaii pulled within 20-13 after Moniz's 56-yard scoring pass to Kealoha Pilares late in the first half but Barkley then connected with Johnson on the 13-yard scoring play. Johnson's punt return for a score came midway through the third period and he caught the 3-yard scoring throw with 27 seconds to go in the quarter, putting the Trojans up 42-23.
Pilares caught a pair of fourth-quarter passes for touchdowns for Hawaii (0-1) before Tyler turned in his long scoring run.
