KANSAS CITY, Mo., Sept. 2 (UPI) -- Matt Cassel threw a first-quarter touchdown pass Thursday and the Kansas City Chiefs fought off Green Bay 17-13 for their only win of the pre-season.

Cassel, Kansas City's regular-season starting quarterback, hit Leonard Pope with a 2-yard scoring pass and Jackie Battle gave the Chiefs a 14-0 lead in the second quarter with a 1-yard run.

Kansas City avoided what would have been its second straight winless pre-season. The Chiefs begin the campaign hosting San Diego.

Green Bay's Matt Flynn went 23-of-37 for 304 yards, six of the passes going to Brett Swain for 130 yards. Starting quarterback Aaron Rodgers did not play for the Packers.

Green Bay (2-2) opens its season at Philadelphia.
