NEW YORK, Aug. 31 (UPI) -- Imprisoned former New York Giants wide receiver Plaxico Burress has been denied work release privileges, New York corrections officials said Tuesday.
The 2007 Super Bowl hero, who has been behind bars for 10 months as part of a two-year sentence on an attempted weapons possession charge, won't be getting out of jail early, the New York Daily News reported.
Burress won't become eligible for parole until June 6. It was the second time New York prison officials have denied a request for work release for the former player.
"The serious and negative impact illegal guns have on the community coupled with dangerous nature of the weapon discharging in a public place renders him unsuitable for work release participation," officials wrote in a denial letter.
Prosecutors have staunchly opposed releasing Burress early, the Daily News said.
Burress accidentally shot himself in the leg in November 2008 while carrying a concealed, unlicensed handgun at a Manhattan night club.
