SAN DIEGO, Aug. 29 (UPI) -- Cole Hamels held San Diego scoreless for eight innings and Mike Sweeney homered Sunday in Philadelphia's 5-0 sweep of the Padres.
Hamels (8-10) allowed just four hits and fanned six without walking a batter, recording his first win since July 11. He had been held winless in his last nine starts despite posting a 2.46 ERA during the span.
Sweeney's two-run shot was his first with the Phillies, who with the victory remained in second place, two games behind Atlanta, in the National League East.
They also maintained a 1 1/2-game lead in the wild-card race over San Francisco.
Adrian Gonzalez led the Padres with three hits. The setback was a season-worst fourth straight for first-place San Diego, who were swept in a series for only the second time this season.
Clayton Richard (12-6) absorbed the loss for the Padres, his first since July 22.
