CINCINNATI, Aug. 27 (UPI) -- Jay Bruce hit three homers in support of Johnny Cueto Friday, powering the Cincinnati Reds to a 7-1 victory over the Chicago Cubs.

Bruce hit solo shots in the third and seventh innings and had a three-run blast in the fifth that gave the Reds a 5-1 lead. Chris Valaika, playing in only his third major league game, followed Bruce's fifth-inning homer with one of his own.

Cueto (12-4) went eight innings while giving up a run on six hits and striking out eight. Sam LeCure came on in the ninth to close out the game and struck out two of the three men he faced.

The Reds were coming off a 6-3 road trip and began the evening with a four-game lead over second-place St. Louis in the National League West.

Tom Gorzelanny (7-8) took the loss, allowing six runs on seven hits in five innings.
