
CHICAGO, Aug. 27 (UPI) -- A.J. Pierzynski's two-run double highlighted a four-run first Friday, starting the Chicago White Sox on their way to a 9-4 win over the New York Yankees.
Chicago also had a four-run fourth that featured an error by New York catcher Francisco Cervelli and a run-scoring wild pitch from relief pitcher Sergio Mitre.
The White Sox roughed up starter A.J. Burnett (9-12), who has lost his last four decisions.
New York remained in a tie for the top spot in the American League East with Tampa Bay and both teams saw Boston creep within 4 1/2 games of the lead. Chicago began the night trailing Minnesota by 3 1/2 games in the AL Central.
Freddy Garcia (11-5) gave up only one earned run on five hits in seven innings to get the win. Burnett coughed up nine runs, eight earned, on eight hits in 3 1/3 innings.
The White Sox had a 9-2 lead going into the ninth before Nick Swisher hit a two-run blast.
