DALLAS, Aug. 27 (UPI) -- Southern Methodist University announced Friday football Coach June Jones had signed a two-year extension through the 2014 season.

The Mustangs created the most successful turnaround in major college football last year, improving by seven victories for an 8-5 record. They then defeated Nevada in the Hawaii Bowl.

Jones came to SMU from Hawaii in 2008, bringing with him a wide open offense. The Mustangs went 1-11 in his first year with the school.

"Coach Jones has brought a winning culture to our football program, and under his leadership, I know he will soon exceed my goal for the football program here at SMU -- and that is to be a perennial top-25 team," Athletic Director Steve Orsini said.

Jones coached the Atlanta Falcons in the NFL for three seasons beginning in 1994 and also coached the San Diego Chargers on an interim basis for 10 games in 1998.
