Chisox awarded Ramirez off waivers

CHICAGO, Aug. 27 (UPI) -- The Chicago White Sox have been awarded Los Angeles Dodgers slugger Manny Ramirez through a waiver claim, MLB.com confirmed Friday.

Before the 38-year-old, 12-time all-star pulls on a White Sox uniform, however, Chicago must either finalize a trade with the Dodgers before a Tuesday deadline or assume the approximately $4.5 million left on his 2-year, $20 million contract, which expires at the end of this season.

The Dodgers reserve the right to pull Ramirez back off waivers but now no other National League team can put in a claim for Ramirez. The Texas Rangers were confirmed to have put in a claim as well.

Under waiver rules, claims are awarded based on standings, and first to the league in which the player currently resides.

Ramirez was placed on waivers Wednesday. He came off the disabled list Saturday after recovering from a right calf strain.

He's hitting .313 with a .407 on-base percentage, eight home runs and 40 RBI in 64 games this season.
