CHAPEL HILL, N.C., Aug. 26 (UPI) -- University of North Carolina officials announced Thursday an investigation into possible NCAA violations by the school is widening.
Football Coach Butch Davis, appearing at a news conference, said the school had learned of possible violations involving a former undergraduate tutor and players on his team.
"Everything that we can possibly do from the full cooperative standpoint we are absolutely committed to doing," Davis said.
He admitted one of the tutors involved in the investigation worked for his family.
"She was one of five individuals over the course of the last two years, some within the university system and some outside the university system, that our family has employed to be an academic coach and an academic advisor," Davis said.
The exact nature of the possible violations was not disclosed.
The (Raleigh, N.C.) News & Observer previously reported that former North Carolina defensive lineman Kentwan Balmer paid for two players to travel to and take part in a training activity in California during the summer of 2009.
Balmer was a first-round pick of the San Francisco 49ers in 2008. The 49ers traded him Aug. 16 to the Seattle Seahawks Monday for an undisclosed 2011 draft pick.
