USA defeats Greece in basketball tuneup

ATHENS, Greece, Aug. 25 (UPI) -- Eric Gordon scored 18 points and the United States pulled away in the second half Wednesday to defeat Greece 87-59 in its final World Championship tuneup.

The Americans open the World Championships in Turkey Saturday against Croatia. They finished their exhibition schedule unbeaten, with wins over France, Lithuania, defending world champion Spain and Greece.

After taking a 10-point halftime lead, Team USA went on a 28-12 run in the third period to blow the game open.

In the four pre-championship games, Kevin Durant led the Americans with an average of 17 points per contest.

There will be 24 teams at the World Championship, divided into four groups. The top four in each six-team group will advance to the knockout round.

The Americans will be in Group B along with Croatia, Slovenia, Brazil, Iran and Tunisia.
