BOSTON, Aug. 25 (UPI) -- Daniel Nava's two-run single capped a big Boston sixth inning Wednesday and the Red Sox downed Seattle 4-3 in the first game of a doubleheader.

After Adrian Beltre broke a scoreless game with a run-scoring single and Mike Lowell made it 2-0 with a sacrifice fly, Nava laced a two-out pitch from David Pauley (2-5) to right, scoring Beltre and David Ortiz for a four-run Bosox advantage.

The Red Sox ended up needing all those runs after Josh Beckett (4-3) surrendered a solo homer to Russell Branyan and a two-run shot to Casey Kotchman in the next half-inning.

But Daniel Bard came in to toss 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief and Jonathan Papelbon notched his 32nd save with a 1-2-3 ninth to give Boston the win in a contest rescheduled from Tuesday night due to rain.

Beckett pitched 6 1/3 shutout innings before yielding the two homers, walking one and striking out seven.
