DETROIT, Aug. 24 (UPI) -- Detroit Tigers outfielder Magglio Ordonez needs a further procedure for his broken ankle and is out for the rest of the season, the team Tuesday.

Ordonez fractured his ankle July 24 while trying to score on a double. He had an expected recovery time of 6-to-8 weeks but doctors now will undertake a further procedure to stabilize the fracture.

The procedure means Ordonez is done for the year.

The recommendation was made by foot/ankle specialist Dr. Phillip Kwong of the Kerlan-Jobe Clinic in Los Angeles.
