
NEW HAVEN, Conn., Aug. 24 (UPI) -- Australian Samantha Stosur outlasted Sara Errani in three sets Tuesday to advance to the quarterfinals of Pilot Pen Tennis event.
Stosur, seeded second in the final hard-court tuneup for the U.S. Open, prevailed over the 23-year-old Italian 6-1, 3-6, 7-6 (7-4). The victory put Stosur in the quarterfinals or better in nine of her last 10 tournaments.
Also Tuesday, sixth-seeded Marion Bartoli barely got through to the second round, edging Ukrainian Alona Bondarenko 6-7 (4-7), 7-6 (7-2), 6-3.
Bartoli goes on to face Aussie Anastasia Rodionova.
In other action Tuesday, 2009 U.S. Open semifinalist Yanina Wickmayer was bounced in an upset at the hands of Swiss Timea Bacsinszky 6-3, 6-1 and seventh-seeded Italian Flavia Pennetta prevailed over Alisa Kleybanova with a 6-4, 6-4 decision.
