
NEW HAVEN, Conn., Aug. 23 (UPI) -- No. 4 seed Elena Dementieva breezed to a win Monday in the first round of the Pilot Pen Tennis event in New Haven, Conn.
Dementieva eased past Spaniard Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez 6-1, 6-2 at Yale University's Connecticut Tennis Center.
She was joined in the second round by former world No. 1 Dinara Safina, who came from a set down to post a 1-6, 6-3, 6-1 decision over No. 3 seed Francesca Schiavone of Italy.
Also logging an early win was Slovakian lucky-loser Dominika Cibulkova, who bested Melanie Oudin 6-2, 5-7, 6-4 and now goes on to meet two-time defending Pilot Pen champion Caroline Wozniacki in the second round.
Meanwhile, No. 8 seed Nadia Petrova of Russia downed American qualifier Varvara Lepchenko 1-6, 7-5, 6-1 and fellow American qualifier Bethanie Mattek-Sands ousted Romanian Alexandra Dulgheru 6-2, 6-1.
