KANSAS CITY, Mo., Aug. 22 (UPI) -- Yunieski Betancourt drove in five runs Saturday, lifting Kansas City to a 6-5, 11-inning win over the Chicago White Sox in the first game of a doubleheader.
Betancourt erased a 5-1 deficit with a seventh-inning grand slam. He then drove in the game-winner with a sharp grounder past shortstop Alexi Ramirez in extra frames, scoring Wilson Betemit to complete the Royals' comeback.
Betancourt finished the game 3-for-5 while Mike Aviles added three hits for Kansas City, which took the first contest in a doubleheader that started at 6:10 p.m.
Jesse Chavez (2-1) tossed two scoreless innings to collect the victory for the Royals.
Rookie White Sox pitcher Chris Sale (0-1) suffered his first career loss, going 1 2/3 innings. He allowed Betemit to reach base in the 11th before Sox closer Bobby Jenks gave up the game-winning hit to Betancourt.
