MINNEAPOLIS, Aug. 18 (UPI) -- Jim Thome smashed a two-run homer in the 10th inning Tuesday, giving the Minnesota Twins a come-from-behind 7-6 win over the Chicago White Sox.
With the Twins trailing 6-5 entering their final at-bat, Delmon Young stroked a leadoff single off Matt Thornton (3-4) and Thome followed by blasting a long drive to right, giving the Twins a walk-off win and lengthening their lead over the second-place White Sox to four games in the American League Central.
Thome's homer against his former Chisox teammates was the 581st of his career. He finished the night 3-for-5 with three RBI to hand Minnesota a win in a three-game series with the Sox at Target Field.
Ron Mahay (1-1) got credit for the victory after inducing Juan Pierre to line out for the final out in the top of the 10th, after Jon Rauch had allowed Chicago to take a 6-5 lead on Alexi Ramirez's RBI single.
Young homered and went 3-for-5 and Orlando Hudson added a solo shot for the victors.
Ramirez, Paul Konerko and Mark Kotsay all went deep for the White Sox.
