Berdych through to Cincy third round

CINCINNATI, Aug. 17 (UPI) -- Thomas Berdych advanced to the third round of the Western & Southern Financial Group Masters Tuesday with a win over Paul-Henri Mathieu.

The seventh-seeded Berdych, who was the runner-up at Wimbledon this year, dispatched the Frenchman 6-4, 6-4.

Also notching a second-round win was Cypriot Marcos Baghdatis, who is coming off a second-place finish last week in Washington. Baghdatis downed Brazilian Thomaz Bellucci 6-2, 4-6, 7-6 (7-4).

American Mardy Fish registered an opening-round 7-6 (7-4), 7-5 victory over France's Gilles Simon. The red-hot Fish raised his victory total to 30 matches this season, including 12 of his last 13.

Losing in first-round upsets Tuesday were seeded players Mikhail Youzhny of Russia, Croatian Ivan Ljubicic and Frenchman Gael Monfils.
