WASHINGTON, Aug. 15 (UPI) -- Ian Desmond drove in the go-ahead run with a seventh-inning single and the Washington Nationals went on to down Arizona 5-3 Sunday.

Adam Kennedy singled to lead off the frame in a 3-3 tie game, went to second on a sacrifice by pinch-hitter Alberto Gonzalez and came home when Desmond collected a hit off Jordan Norberto (0-2).

Ryan Zimmerman homered in the eighth to provide an insurance run for the Nationals, who took the rubber match of a three-game series with the Diamondbacks.

Rookie phenom Stephen Strasburg made his first start since coming off the disabled list, getting a no-decision in a five-inning effort, allowing three runs on five hits.

The victory went to Tyler Clippard (9-6) and Drew Storen pitched a scoreless ninth for his second save of the year.

Adam LaRoche homered and went 3-for-4 for Arizona.
