
BALTIMORE, Aug. 12 (UPI) -- An 8-yard run by Troy Smith gave Baltimore an eight-point lead in the third quarter Thursday and the Ravens held on for a 17-12 pre-season win over Carolina.
Joe Flacco completed 8-of-12 passes for 120 yards and threw a 30-yard scoring pass to Mark Clayton that gave the Ravens a 10-0 cushion in the second period.
The Panthers took over at their own 19 with 2:28 to play in the game and reached the Baltimore 44 before running out of downs with 30 seconds remaining.
The opening pre-season contest was played in rainy conditions.
Receiver Anquan Boldin, Baltimore's top addition in free agency this year, had a single catch for 12 yards.
Carolina rookie quarterback Jimmy Clausen was 8-of-15 for 80 yards with an interception. Matt Moore started the game and went 4-of-7 for 32 yards for the Panthers.
