CINCINNATI, Aug. 11 (UPI) -- Adam Wainwright hurled seven shutout innings for his 17th win and St. Louis grabbed first place Wednesday with a 6-1 victory over Cincinnati.
Wainwright (17-6) joined Colorado's Ubaldo Jimemez as baseball's only 17-game winners. He baffled the Reds on two hits, walking none and striking out four to lead the Cardinals to a three-game sweep of Cincinnati and sole possession of the National League Central lead.
The St. Louis right-hander raised his record to 7-1 in his last nine starts, allowing one run or fewer eight times. Wainwright lowered his ERA to 1.99 with his latest performance.
Colby Rasmus slammed a grand slam homer in the fifth inning and Skip Schumaker went 3-for-4 with an RBI for the victors, who entered the series two games behind the Reds in the NL Central.
Cincinnati starter Bronson Arroyo (12-7) yielded four runs on six hits over five innings.
