SEATTLE, Aug. 10 (UPI) -- Doug Fister and three relievers combined to shut Oakland down on seven hits Monday and the Seattle Mariners topped the A's 3-1.
Fister (4-8) got a win for interim Manager Daren Brown in his first game as skipper after replacing the fired Don Wakamatsu.
Fister went six innings, yielding all seven A's hits. But the right-hander issued only one walk and struck out five to notch his first win since May 14 and lead the Mariners to victory in the first of a three-game series at Safeco Field.
He was aided by a triple play -- the 10th in Seattle franchise history -- in the fourth on an around-the-horn play started by third baseman Jose Lopez.
Sean White, Brandon League and David Aardsma each notched a scoreless inning of relief, with Aardsma picking up his 21st save.
Lopez and Franklin Gutierrez drove in first-inning runs for Seattle.
A's starter Vin Mazarro (6-4) surrendered three runs on five hits in seven innings.
