Men's tennis Top 10 has no Americans
LONDON, Aug. 9 (UPI) -- Andy Roddick dropped two spots to No. 11 in the men's world tennis rankings, marking the first time no American is rated in the Top 10.
Roddick was ousted in the third round of the Legg Mason Tennis Classic last week. He'd been a semifinalist in the event last year and, as a result, lost 315 points in the rankings. That allowed Fernando Verdasco and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga to pass Roddick, who had been in the Top 10 each week since Aug. 21, 2006.
The only other change in the Top 10 was Tomas Berdych's one-spot improvement at the expense of the injured Juan Martin del Potro. Berdych is now seventh and del Potro slipped to eighth.
Rafael Nadal has a healthy grasp on the No. 1 spot. He's been on top for a total of 56 weeks and will likely move into the Top 10 on the list of most weeks at No. 1 this month. Jim Courier, No. 1 for 58 weeks, is 10th on that list.
Novak Djokovic is second, not far ahead of Roger Federer. Andy Murray is ranked No. 4 ahead of fifth-ranked Robin Soderling and No. 6 Nikolay Davydenko.
Berdych is seventh and del Potro eighth while Verdasco takes the No. 9 spot and Tsonga is 10th.
Woods still No. 1 headed to PGA
VIRGINIA WATER, England, Aug. 9 (UPI) -- Tiger Woods, despite one of the worst showings of his professional career, takes the world No. 1 golf ranking into the year's final major tournament.
Woods has been No. 1 for a total of 612 weeks, including the last 270 in a row. Phil Mickelson has been creeping up on Woods, whose once huge rankings points total has eroded over the last year.
Woods finished tied for 78th at the Bridgestone Invitational in Ohio Sunday with a 72-hole total of 18-over-par 298. Mickelson needed to finish in the top four to take over the No. 1 spot but sagged to an 8-over 78 in the final round and tied for 46th.
Still, Woods and Mickelson are 1-2 in the rankings, which were released Monday, going into the PGA Championship in Kohler, Wis.
The world's third-rated golfer, Lee Westwood, will miss the PGA event because of a leg injury.
There were no changes in the Top 10. Steve Stricker is fourth with Jim Furyk in the No. 5 spot. Ernie Els remained No. 6 ahead of Luke Donald and Rory McIlroy. Paul Casey holds into the No. 9 spot and Ian Poulter is 10th.
Saints mark NFL title at White House
WASHINGTON, Aug. 9 (UPI) -- The New Orleans Saints visited the White House Monday to mark their Super Bowl XLIV victory.
The Saints were welcomed by U.S. President Barack Obama who said the 31-17 NFL championship game win over the Indianapolis Colts helped buoy spirits in New Orleans and Louisiana, which are still trying to overcome the effects of Hurricane Katrina and the Gulf of Mexico oil spill.
Obama said: "Plenty of cities carry their sports teams through a tough season. It's a rare thing when a sports team carries its city through tough times."
Saints owner Tom Benson, Coach Sean Payton and quarterback Drew Brees were in the team delegation on hand for the ceremony. They presented the president with a Saints jersey, No. 44.
Nordqvist, Kim up in women's golf ranking
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla., Aug. 9 (UPI) -- Strong showings by Anna Nordqvist and Kim In-kyung in Ireland resulted in the two golfers moving up in the world women's rankings released Monday.
Kim finished tied for second and Nordqvist was sixth in the European LPGA's AIB Ladies Irish Open. With Kim Song-hee not competing in Ireland, Nordqvist moved from ninth to eighth while Kim In-kyung went from 10th to ninth. Kim Song-hee fell from the No. 8 spot to 10th.
Ladies Irish Open champion Sophie Gustafson improved from 30th to 24th in the world.
With the LPGA off from the July 29-Aug. 1 British Women's Open until the Aug. 20-22 Safeway Classic in Oregon, the top of the world rankings remained static.
Jiyai Shin is No. 1 in the world with Cristie Kerr, in a tie with Shin for average points but having appeared in fewer tournaments, second. Ai Miyazato is a close third.
Suzann Pettersen occupies the No. 4 position and Yani Tseng is fifth, Choi No-yeon is sixth and Paula Creamer, narrowly ahead of Nordqvist, is seventh.
