CINCINNATI, Aug. 9 (UPI) -- Skip Schumaker's grand slam homer highlighted a seven-run fourth inning outburst Monday and the St. Louis Cardinals pounded Cincinnati 7-3.

Matt Holliday and Colby Rasmus each delivered RBI singles before Schumaker lashed a pitch to left-center field that easily cleared the fence and gave the Cards a 6-0 lead.

Albert Pujols added a run-scoring single to finish the big inning, in which St. Louis sent 12 men to the plate and collected eight hits.

The victory in the first of a three-game series pulled the Cardinals to within one game of first-place Cincinnati atop the National League Central.

Chris Carpenter (13-3) posted his sixth straight start without a loss. He limited the Reds to two runs on five hits and three walks over seven innings, striking out five.

Reds starter Mike Leake (7-4) was rocked for seven runs (six earned) on nine hits in a 3 2/3-inning effort.
