NEW YORK, Aug. 9 (UPI) -- Jon Lester and two relievers limited the New York Yankees to six hits Monday in helping the Boston Red Sox to a 2-1 victory.

Lester (12-7) allowed four hits and walked three but didn't give up a run in 6 1/3 innings. Daniel Bard gave up two hits, including a home run, in 1 1/3 innings while Jonathan Papelbon got the last three outs on strikeouts in picking up his 28th save.

Yankees starter Phil Hughes (13-5) was nearly as sharp as he surrendered six hits, five of which were singles, over six innings. But the Red Sox scratched out two early runs to beat him.

Ryan Kalish started a second-inning rally with a one-out single. He stole second and took third on a throwing error by Jorge Posada. Bill Hall followed with a single that made the score 1-0. Hall advanced to third on another base hit and scored on a J.D. Drew ground out.

The lone New York run came in the eighth inning when Mark Teixeira hit a lead-off home run. It was his 26th homer of the season.
