MLB: Detroit 9, Los Angeles Angels 4

DETROIT, Aug. 8 (UPI) -- Johnny Damon and Will Rhymes each had three hits and Rick Porcello delivered a strong start Sunday in the Detroit Tigers' 9-4 win over the Los Angeles Angels.

Damon finished with three runs batted in and Rhymes added a pair of RBI. Both got run-scoring hits in the Tigers' three-run fifth inning, which erased a 1-0 deficit and put Detroit ahead for good.

Porcello (5-10) won for the first time in five starts since being recalled from Class AAA Toledo last month. He yielded two earned runs on eight hits over six innings, walking none and fanning four as the Tigers avoided a three-game sweep at the hands of the Angels.

Trevor Bell (1-3) took the loss in his seventh career start. He was touched for six runs (four earned) on nine hits in 5 1/3 innings for Los Angeles.

Juan Rivera got two hits and drove in a run for the Angels, who played without outfielder Torii Hunter. Hunter began serving a four-game suspension for making contact with umpire Ron Kulpa during a tirade in Friday's game at Comerica Park.
