MLB: Philadelphia 7, New York Mets 5

PHILADELPHIA, Aug. 6 (UPI) -- Mike Sweeney started a six-run eighth inning with the first of five straight Philadelphia hits Friday and the Phillies rallied past the New York Mets 7-5.

The Mets were clinging to a 2-1 lead going into the eighth, but the Phillies roughed up three pitchers by sending 11 men to the plate.

Sweeney, Jayson Werth, Ben Francisco, Carlos Ruiz and Wilson Valdez all singled to start the inning, accounting for two runs and loading the bases for pinch-hitter Ross Gload.

Gload drew a walk to force in another run, Jimmy Rollins had an RBI single and Placido Polanco had a sacrifice fly. Sweeney then finished things with another run-scoring base hit.

Mike Hessman drew the Mets within 7-5 in the ninth with a three-run, two-out homer off J.C. Romero, but Brad Lidge came on to strike out Jesus Feliciano to end the game and grab his 13th save.

The Phillies won their 12th straight home game.

Chad Durbin (3-1) worked the top of the eighth to get the win in relief of Joe Blanton.

Bobby Parnell (0-1), the first of the three New York pitchers in the eighth, took the loss. He gave up four runs on four hits without retiring a batter.
