MLB: Arizona 6, Washington 1

PHOENIX, Aug. 4 (UPI) -- Mark Reynolds' birthday Tuesday was a mixed bag that included a three-run homer and a fastball off his helmet in Arizona's 6-1 win over Washington.

Reynolds, who turned 27, left the game under his own power a few minutes after being nailed by a Collin Balester fastball in the sixth inning, but he returned to the dugout later in the game and did not appear to be seriously injured.

Reynolds' home run in the fourth inning backed up a sharp complete-game outing for Joe Saunders (1-0), who limited the Nationals to five hits and struck out five. Steven Drew had a solo home run for the Diamondbacks, who ended their five-game losing streak.

Ryan Zimmerman's 19th home run of the year in the first inning accounted for the Nationals' only run.

Scott Olsen (3-3) took the loss in his first start since injuring his shoulder in May. Olsen gave up five runs on seven hits in 5 2/3 innings.
