BOSTON, Aug. 3 (UPI) -- Boston Red Sox first baseman Kevin Youkilis was placed on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday with a torn muscle in his right thumb.

Red Sox Manager Terry Francona made the announcement before Tuesday night's Red Sox-Cleveland Indians game at Fenway Park, MLB.com reported.

"There's a chance, maybe in two weeks hopefully it scars up little bit and he feels good enough to play and be productive," Francona said.

Youkilis, a key to the Boston offense, was hitting .307 with 19 homers and 62 RBIs.

Francona said Mike Lowell had been activated and would start at first base in place of Youkilis.
