DENVER, July 31 (UPI) -- Ian Stewart and Dexter Fowler hit two-run homers during a monstrous 12-run eighth inning Friday and Colorado had 21 hits in blasting the Chicago Cubs 17-2.
Everybody in the Colorado batting order came to the plate twice in the 12th inning, during which the Rockies had 13 hits -- eight for extra bases -- and two walks. All of the runs were scored after two were out.
Stewart ended the inning with a deep fly ball to center to leave the bases loaded. Clint Barmes, Melvin Mora, Carlos Gonzalez and Troy Tulowitzki all had two hits in the inning.
Sean Marshall gave up five of the runs in the eighth while retiring two batters. Andrew Cashner allowed six runs and did not get anybody out.
The loss went to Ryan Dempster (8-8), who gave up five runs on seven hits over four innings and left the game trailing 5-0.
Jeff Francis (4-3) got the win while allowing two runs on four hits in six innings.
