CLEVELAND, July 28 (UPI) -- The Detroit Tigers acquired third baseman Jhonny Peralta and cash from the Cleveland Indians Wednesday for left-handed pitcher Giovanni Soto.

For his career, he is batting .264 with 103 home runs and 456 RBI in 923 games.

Soto has been pitching for the Tigers' Class A affiliate in West Michigan, where he started 16 games and had gone 6-6 with a 2.61 earned run average.

The Tigers were without a top-flight third baseman since Brandon Inge went down with a broken hand July 19. They are in a dogfight with the Chicago White Sox and Minnesota Twins for the American League Central title.

The Tigers also announced they had designated outfielder Wilkin Ramirez for assignment.
