MILWAUKEE, July 26 (UPI) -- Jim Edmonds cracked a pinch-hit homer in the eighth inning Monday and the Milwaukee Brewers edged Cincinnati 3-2.
After Reds starter Bronson Arroyo (10-6) had set down the first two Milwaukee batters in the eighth inning of a 2-2 game, Edmonds came in to bat for pitcher Carlos Villanueva (1-0) and blasted a pitch into the second deck in center field, handing the Brewers their fifth straight win.
Villanueva recorded the victory by tossing a scoreless eighth and John Axford notched his 15th save.
Brewers starter Randy Wolf allowed two runs on five hits over seven innings.
Arroyo tossed a complete-game loss, surrendering only three hits in eight frames. One of those hits was a two-run homer by Rickie Weeks, his 21st home run of the season, in the third inning.
Ryan Hanigan drove in both runs for Cincinnati, which fell a game behind first-place St. Louis in the National League Central.
