Dolgopolov wins at Croatia Open

UMAG, Croatia, July 26 (UPI) -- No. 6-seeded Alexandr Dolgopolov won a third-set tie-breaker Monday and escaped the first round of the Croatia Open tennis tournament.

Dolgopolov was on the court more than 2 1/2 hours in taking a 3-6, 6-7 (6-8), 7-6 (7-3) decision from Paolo Lorenzi. It was the only regular-draw match to be completed Monday as rains stopped play in the evening matches.

Dolgopolov won nearly 60 percent of the points in the first set before Lorenzi came back. Both players recorded two service breaks in the second set and traded breaks again in the third before Dolgopolov built an edge in the decisive tie-breaker.

Eighth-seeded Juan Ignacio Chela was leading 4-3, 30-40 in the first set when his match with Ruben Ramirez Hidalgo was suspended because of rain.

Franco Skugor had built a 6-2, 2-0 lead over Filippo Volandri when the storm hit.
