DETROIT, July 25 (UPI) -- Lyle Overbay socked a two-run homer in the ninth inning Sunday and the Toronto Blue Jays defeated Detroit 5-3 in the first game of doubleheader.
Jose Valverde (1-2) issued a lead-off walk to Vernon Wells and two outs later Overbay lofted an opposite-field fly to left that barely eluded the grasp of outfielder Ryan Raburn and handed the Blue Jays a win.
Wells and Jose Molina also went deep for Toronto.
Scott Downs (4-5) got credit for the win after getting the final two outs of the eighth inning and Kevin Gregg picked up his 23rd save.
Blue Jays starter Brett Cecil allowed two runs on six hits over seven innings.
Danny Worth homered for the injury-depleted Tigers, who put outfielder Magglio Ordonez (fractured ankle) and infielder Carlos Guillen (strained calf) on the disabled list Sunday.
