SEATTLE, July 23 (UPI) -- Eric Patterson doubled in two runs in the 13th inning Thursday, giving Boston an 8-6 win over Seattle, which had forced extra innings with a five-run ninth.

The Red Sox took a 6-1 lead into the bottom of the ninth but a two-run home run by Franklin Gutierrez set off the Seattle rally. The last two runs scored on a potential game-ending double-play that turned on a throwing error.

Boston's Kevin Youkilis opened the 13th with a single and, two outs later, Mike Cameron walked. Patterson then hit a 1-2 offering from Garrett Olson (0-3) to center for a double that scored both Youkilis and Cameron.

The ninth-inning Seattle rally spoiled a strong outing by Boston starter John Lackey, who allowed two hits and an unearned run over eight innings. Manny Delcarmen was charged with four runs -- three earned -- without retiring a batter. Hideki Okajima (3-2), who pitched the 11th and 12th innings got the win and Ramon Ramirez picked up his second save.

The Mariners' Milton Bradley walked, stole second, went to third on a ground out and scored on a passed ball in putting Seattle up 1-0 in the second.

Boston came back with three runs in the second with a two-run homer from Bill Hall and an RBI single from David Ortiz. J.D. Drew chipped in a two-run home run in the sixth and Marco Scutaro made it 6-1 with a home run in the seventh.
