MLB: Milwaukee 3, Pittsburgh 2

PITTSBURGH, July 22 (UPI) -- Homers by Prince Fielder and Rickie Weeks accounted for three runs Thursday and Milwaukee cooled off the Pittsburgh bats to down the Pirates 3-2.

Pittsburgh had scored a total of 24 runs against the Brewers in the previous two nights and the Pirates had managed at least nine runs in four of their six games since the All-Star break.

Yovani Gallardo, however, threw six shutout innings in his first start in almost three weeks, helping Milwaukee earn a split of the four-game series.

Gallardo (9-4) struck out five and gave up five hits before turning things over to the bullpen.

Todd Coffey gave up a two-run double to Neil Walker in the seventh inning that brought the Pirates within a run, but Chris Capuano and John Axford teamed to throw 2 1/3 perfect innings to nail down the victory. Axford earned his 13th save by retiring the final five batters.

Fielder hit a solo homer in the fourth and Weeks had a two-run shot in the seventh.
