BAD GASTEIN, Austria, July 22 (UPI) -- Alize Cornet defeated top-seeded Andrea Petkovic in straight sets Thursday and advanced to the quarterfinals of the Gastein Ladies tennis tournament in Austria.

Cornet had three service breaks in the first set and added two more late in the second in claiming a 6-2, 7-5 win over Petkovic. Cornet won 61 percent of the points on serve despite seven double faults.

She'll go against Patricia Mayr in Friday's quarterfinals. Mayr also advanced in an upset, knocking off seventh-seeded Tathiana Garbin 6-3, 6-4 behind a pair of breaks in each set.

The other second-round matches Thursday saw Julia Goerges stop Mariya Koryttseva 6-2, 7-5; and Yvonne Meusburger edged by Lucie Hradecka 7-5, 7-5.

In addition to the Cornet-Mayr match, Friday's schedule has Goerges playing Anastasia Pivovarova, Meusburger going against eighth-seeded Anastasija Sevastova and Sandra Zahlavova meeting No. 2-seeded Timea Bacsinszky.
