ST. LOUIS, July 20 (UPI) -- Chris Carpenter scattered five hits in eight strong innings and picked up the win Tuesday in the St. Louis Cardinals' 7-1 win over Philadelphia.
Carpenter (11-3) struck out four and allowed one run to carry the Cardinals to their seventh consecutive win and send the Phillies to their fifth loss in six games.
Matt Holiday had a three-run homer for the St. Louis and Randy Winn connected for a two-run homer to back up Carpenter's gem.
Jason Werth and Placido Polanco both had two hits for Philadelphia.
Phillies' starting pitcher Jamie Moyer managed only one inning before sitting down due to a strained left elbow. He was replaced by Andrew Carpenter (0-1) who gave up three runs in three innings and was tagged with the loss.
Winn homered off Andrew Carpenter in the third to put St. Louis ahead 2-0. The Cardinals added four runs in the fourth on Holiday's homer and a wild pitch that allowed Yadier Molina to score.
Philadelphia was blanked until the eighth inning when Winn singled in their only run to close out the scoring.
