OAKLAND, Calif., July 20 (UPI) -- Daisuke Matsuzaka shut down Oakland on two hits in six-plus innings Monday and the Boston Red Sox edged the Athletics 2-1.
Matsuzaka (7-3) yielded only one run, walking two and fanning six to raise his road record to 4-0 in his last six starts away from Fenway Park.
Daniel Bard contributed 1 1/3 scoreless relief innings and Jonathan Papelbon nailed down the victory with a 1-2-3 ninth, picking up his 21st save.
David Ortiz hit a sacrifice fly after Eric Patterson's triple and Adrian Beltre added a solo homer in the fourth to account for Boston's offense as the Red Sox took the first of three games at Oakland Coliseum.
Ben Sheets (4-9) took the hard-luck loss for the A's, allowing two runs on seven hits.
