ANAHEIM, Calif., July 18 (UPI) -- Jose Lopez drove in Franklin Gutierrez with the go-ahead run in the 10th inning Sunday and the Seattle Mariners defeated the Los Angeles Angels 2-1.
Gutierrez got aboard against Kevin Jepsen (2-2) and stole second base with two outs. Lopez then delivered a clutch line drive to left field to score the runner, allowing the Mariners to avoid a four-game sweep at Angels Stadium.
Brandon League (6-6) got the victory for tossing 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief and David Aardsma collected his 17th save in the bottom of the 10th.
Jason Vargas turned in a strong start, holding the Angels to one run on four hits over 7 2/3 innings, striking out nine and walking only one.
Los Angeles starter Ervin Santana was also sharp, yielding only one run on three hits in a seven-inning effort.
