Bettencourt hangs on for Reno-Tahoe win

RENO, Nev., July 18 (UPI) -- Matt Bettencourt carded a 4-under-par 68 and hung on to win the Reno-Tahoe Open Sunday after Bob Heintz missed a short birdie putt.

Heintz could have forced a playoff had he holed the 3-footer, but he missed it, handing Bettencourt his first PGA Tour victory.

The 35-year-old Californian made it tough on himself when he hit two bunkers and registered a bogey on the 18th hole, but he managed to record the victory after finishing with an 11-under 277 -- his first title since a Nationwide Tour win in 2008.

Heintz (69) ended one stroke back at minus-10 in sole possession of second place. John Merrick and Mathias Gronberg of Sweden both shot 69s to share third place at 9-under 279 on the Montreux course.

Third-round leader and tournament host Scott McCarron stumbled to 9-over 81, plummeting into a 35th-place tie.
