ANAHEIM, Calif., July 16 (UPI) -- Erick Aybar and Bobby Abreu drove in three runs each Thursday and the Los Angeles Angels pounded out 16 hits in an 8-3 win over Seattle.
The Angels lost eight of their last 10 games prior to the All-Star break, but they fought off a comeback bid by the Mariners to stay within 4 1/2 games of Texas for the lead in the American League West.
Abreu doubled in a run in the first and Aybar had a two-run single during a three-run second to give the Angels a 4-0 lead.
Seattle climbed back within one on Ichiro Suzuki's three-run double in the fifth, but Joel Pineiro settled down after that and got solid relief help.
The Angels rebuilt their lead with a three-run sixth, one of the runs coming in on a single by Aybar and two more on a base hit by Abreu.
Pineiro (10-6) gave up six hits and struck out four in seven innings. Kevin Jepsen gave up a hit in the eighth and Francisco Rodriguez issued a ninth-inning walk in a non-save situation.
Doug Fister (3-5) was charged with the loss, surrendering 6 runs on 12 hits in 5 2/3.
