STUTTGART, Germany, July 12 (UPI) -- Eighth-seeded Victor Hanescu was ousted in first-round action Monday at the Mercedes Cup tennis tournament in Germany.
Marco Chiudinelli dumped Hanescu 7-6 (7-4), 6-3 by saving all four of the break points he faced. Hanescu, last year's Mercedes Cup runner-up, dropped serve just once but that was the difference in the second set.
There was only one other regular-draw match on the schedule, which included the completion of qualifying play.
In the main draw, Mischa Zverev stopped Sergiy Stakhovsky 6-4, 6-3. Zverev benefited from five breaks in Stakhovsky's 10 service games and won as many points when received as Stakhovsky did while serving.
The tournament's top seeds -- Nikolay Davydenko, Jurgen Melzer, Gael Monfils and Juan Carlos Ferrero -- all received first-round byes.
