Stricker passes Goydos for John Deere lead

SILVIS, Ill., July 9 (UPI) -- Steve Stricker vaulted past Paul Goydos Friday to seize a one-shot lead midway through the John Deere Classic in Silvis, Ill.

Goydos, who Thursday became the fourth player to fire a 59 in a PGA Tour event, birdied five of his first 11 holes Friday but then suffered two late bogeys and settled for a 68 and a 36-hole total of 15-under 127.

Stricker began the day a shot behind Goydos and overtook him with a 66 that left him at 126. Jeff Maggert (65), Matt Jones (67) and George McNeill (65) shared third place at 131.

Six players shot a score lower than 65 in the opening round at the TPC-Deere Run course and only two did so Friday. The best score of the day was a 63 turned in by Boo Weekley, who moved into a tie for eighth at 133.

The others scores of 59 produced on the tour have been shot by Al Geiberger, Chip Beck and David Duval. Of those three, only Beck failed to win the tournament in which he shot a 59.
