Norman withdraws from British Open

ST. ANDREWS, Scotland, July 9 (UPI) -- Greg Norman, saying his recovery from shoulder surgery last summer hasn't progressed enough, has withdrawn from next week's British Open.

Norman has won the British Open twice -- 1986 and 1993 -- but said his golf game hasn't reached competitive levels since surgery last September.

"I'm disappointed that I will not be able to participate in this year's Open Championship, but, unfortunately, it is taking me longer than expected to regain my competitive form," Norman said in an announcement on his Web site.

His spot in the British Open field will be taken by Jason Day, who in May became the youngest Australian to take a PGA Tour title when he won the Byron Nelson Championship. It will be his first appearance in one of golf's major tournaments.
