NEW YORK, July 5 (UPI) -- New York Yankees pitcher Andy Pettitte was added to the American League All-Star team Monday after being controversially bypassed.
Pettitte's name was placed on the AL team pitching roster after Boston Red Sox hurler Clay Buchholz was put on the 15-day disabled list, MLB.com reported.
Yankees Manager Joe Girardi passed over Pettitte in Sunday's selection process for the All-Star Game, which is set for July 13 in Anaheim, Calif., sparking controversy because of the veteran lefty's sparkling 10-2 record and 2.82 ERA.
Pettitte was automatically added to the team when a vacancy was created because his name was next on the player vote list.
"It's been so long. It's been nine years since I've been there," he told the Web site. "It's definitely exciting for me, for sure. ... As the career is winding down here, it makes it more special."
